The Nassau County Housing Development Finance Corp. and their development partner, La Cite Development, hosted a groundbreaking in Hempstead Village on Thursday for an $8.9 million, 29-unit workforce housing project called Village Lofts.
The Village Lofts will be a 32,263-square-foot rental complex on Front Street with one- and two-bedroom apartments. Most of the units will be leased at prices targeting a moderate income level of the housing market, according to a statement.
Twenty-percent of the units will be leased to people making less than 60 percent of the area median income, and the rest to people making less than 90 percent of the median income.
The Empire State Development Corp. has granted $1 million toward the project.
Hempstead Village Mayor Wayne Hall said the housing will provide affordable apartments for Hempstead residents and promote economic development in the area.
